Use emoji for quick reactions 😁

To speed up communication and help people scan for important information, react to messages with emoji. Some examples of common reactions:

  • A check mark (✅) to show that a topic is closed or solved.

  • A heavy plus (➕) to show you have the same issue or agree with the idea in a message.

  • Eyes (👀) to show you have seen a message and will respond later.

Use threads to reply to posts 🧵

When someone posts something interesting in a channel, it makes sense to want to respond quickly. Please try to keep responses in threads when possible.

This makes it easier to find discussion related to a single topic. It also creates less noise in the channel, freeing up space for other discussions. People can then follow threads for discussions they’re interested in and not get notifications for discussions that don’t relate to them.

Follow threads when you need to 👂

If someone posts a message and you’re interested in replies but don’t have anything to add to the conversation, you can follow the thread to get notified when others add messages. For example, when you’re covering for someone on vacation and need to keep an eye on a thread.

Or if you’ve added input to a discussion in a thread and don’t need to follow the rest of the conversation, you can unfollow to stop seeing new replies.

See how to follow and unfollow threads. In either case, you’re still notified if someone tags you.

Keep conversations in threads 🔐

Once you have a conversation in a thread, it should stay there as much as possible. This keeps the discussion focused and stops the entire channel from being notified.

Minimize noise 🔇

The more people are in the channel, the more you are encouraged to think about whether your post is relevant to most of the people in the channel. Try to reduce the amount of noise people get so it’s easier to find the important signals.

Tag people only when the message is time-sensitive and important. Please be mindful of doing so when it is outside their normal working hours.

Limit mass tags 🏷️

Please be mindful that @all and @here mentions to reach a wider audience create a lot of noise. If you’re thinking about mentioning a group, consider whether everyone in the group needs to be involved urgently. Tagging a large group means many people get disruptive notifications.

Only use these options when necessary.

Provide enough context 🗺️

Conversations outside of text provide a lot of their meaning through non-verbal means, such as body language and tone of voice. Make sure to provide enough context so others can understand what you’re trying to communicate.

Avoid messages that just say “hello” 👋

It’s great to remember to always Be Kind and create real relationships with fellow TestLions. And starting messages with a personal connection can feel like a good way to be polite. But getting a notification with only “hey” can break someone out of their focus and make it harder to get the necessary answer.

Try getting everything you need into a single direct message so that only one notification is sent to the person. Aim to be mindful of everyone’s time and attention.

See more on not saying just hi.
